Most physicians adopt new technology after it reaches the market. Dr. Scott Gerrish helped evaluate Matrix Pro before it became commercially available, through participation in its FDA clinical development, and his clinical experience helped refine the treatment protocols patients receive today.
When he considers technology for the practice, one question comes first:
"Does this allow me to treat patients better than what already exists?"
Matrix Pro answered that question. How it does so is explained below, and it is why every treatment here is physician-directed and customized to the patient rather than run on preset settings.
Gerrish MedEsthetics' Scottsdale and Vienna practices are recognized by Candela Medical as Centers of Excellence, reflecting ongoing participation in advanced clinical education and professional engagement with Candela technology. For Matrix Pro, that experience informs how treatment depth, tissue response, and energy settings are selected for each patient.
Matrix Pro uses microneedling radiofrequency, energy delivered through fine needles, to reach the dermis, the deeper living layer of the skin. There, controlled heat can prompt collagen remodeling, the gradual process in which the skin forms and reorganizes collagen.

Depth is not important because deeper is always better. It matters because different tissues require different treatment.
Matrix Pro monitors tissue impedance during treatment, providing real-time feedback about electrical resistance as RF energy is delivered. This information helps the provider make more informed treatment decisions as tissue characteristics change during treatment.
“Skin tightening is not just about heating tissue. It is about understanding where the energy is going, how the tissue responds, and how much the skin can safely tolerate.”Dr. Scott Gerrish
By prompting collagen remodeling in the dermis, Matrix Pro may improve firmness, texture, and the appearance of laxity across the face and body.

Matrix Pro is primarily considered for deeper dermal laxity and remodeling rather than pigment or surface damage, volume loss, or muscular expression.
Before treatment, topical numbing cream is applied. Most patients describe tolerable pressure and warmth; if comfort becomes an issue, the settings are adjusted.
Afterward, mild redness, swelling, and a warm, sunburn-like sensation are common for approximately one to three days, and a faint grid-like pattern or pinpoint scabbing may appear on the surface as the tiny channels heal.
Approximately three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart is typical for collagen remodeling, though some patients benefit from a single session.

In the first weeks
Some improvement in skin texture and smoothness may be noticed as initial healing settles.
Over about three to six months
The more meaningful changes tend to develop gradually as new collagen forms, which may show as firmer, smoother skin and softening of laxity along the jawline and neck. Changes vary from person to person.
Radiofrequency microneedling is often described in a single sentence, needles plus heat. The engineering underneath is more interesting, and it explains why device design and physician settings matter.
RF energy heats tissue by passing current through it, and how much a tissue heats depends on its electrical resistance, or impedance. Different layers of skin conduct differently, which is why the same energy can behave differently from patient to patient and area to area.
The dermis and the fat beneath it have different impedance and different responses to heat. Placing energy at the wrong depth risks affecting the wrong layer. Controlled needle depth is what keeps the remodeling signal in the dermis, where collagen lives, and away from structures that should be left alone.
Skin thickness varies across the face and neck, sometimes by millimeters. Matrix Pro's adjustable needle depth allows the treatment plan to follow that anatomy, shallower where skin is thin and delicate, deeper where laxity calls for it. This is a planning decision, made area by area.
Collagen responds to controlled thermal injury at specific temperatures: fibers contract, and the body's repair response builds new collagen over the following weeks and months. The goal is enough heat to signal remodeling, delivered precisely, not simply more heat.
