Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid biostimulator designed to stimulate collagen production gradually. Unlike hyaluronic-acid fillers, which provide visible volume when they are placed, Sculptra works over time as the skin builds additional collagen.
It may be considered for patients experiencing facial thinning, wrinkles, reduced firmness, or broader changes in facial support who prefer gradual, natural-looking improvement.
When Facial Aging Is Broader Than One Line or Fold
Facial aging does not always appear as one isolated wrinkle. Over time, collagen declines, the skin becomes thinner, facial fat may shift or decrease, and the cheeks, temples, jawline, and lower face may lose support.
Patients may notice
flatter or less supported cheeks
temple hollowing
deeper folds
reduced skin firmness
a thinner or more tired-looking face
changes after weight loss
broader facial aging that cannot be corrected by treating one line alone
Sculptra may be considered when support is needed across a broader area rather than when one feature needs immediate correction.
Sculptra is an injectable treatment containing microparticles of poly-L-lactic acid, commonly abbreviated as PLLA. PLLA is biocompatible and biodegradable.
After injection, the product gradually stimulates collagen formation in the treated tissue. The carrier fluid and early swelling subside, while collagen development occurs progressively over the following weeks and months.
The result is not an immediate gel-like fill. Instead, the appearance changes gradually as collagen support develops.
What Is Sculptra?
A collagen-stimulating injectable.
Biostimulator
A biostimulator is an injectable product intended to stimulate the body's own collagen response over time rather than relying primarily on an injectable gel to create immediate volume.

Matrix Pro + Sculptra + Neurotoxin + Dermal Filler
Follow-up:
8 months
Three-quarter view at eight months after a combination treatment plan using Matrix Pro, Sculptra, neurotoxin, and dermal filler. The result reflects the combined plan rather than any single treatment.

Follow-up:

Profile view at eight months after a combination treatment plan using Matrix Pro, Sculptra, neurotoxin, and dermal filler. The result reflects the combined plan rather than any single treatment.
It cannot be dissolved in the way a hyaluronic-acid filler can.
Hyaluronic-Acid Filler
Primary action
Places a gel that creates immediate volume, shape, or contour.
Timing
Visible correction is generally present at the time of treatment, with swelling settling afterward.
Best suited for
Targeted contour, lips, cheeks, chin, jawline, folds, or other selected areas.
Treatment approach
May be performed in one visit or staged over time.
Reversibility
Most hyaluronic-acid fillers can be treated with hyaluronidase if clinically appropriate.
Neither option is universally better: they solve different problems and may sometimes be staged together.
Physician Insight
“Sculptra and filler are not interchangeable. Filler is useful when we need immediate, precise shaping. Sculptra is useful when the broader goal is gradual collagen support. The most important decision is choosing the treatment that matches the problem.”
Dr. Scott Gerrish
Why Results Are Gradual
Sculptra Is a Process, Not a Single Moment
Unlike a traditional filler, Sculptra develops its effect through the patient's own collagen response. Broader facial support and visible improvement emerge progressively over weeks to months, rather than appearing immediately.
Before treatment, the clinical team reviews facial structure, the degree and distribution of volume loss, tissue quality, health, medications, prior treatment, and the patient's goals. These factors guide suitability, the amount used, placement, number of sessions, treatment intervals, and how Sculptra fits into the overall plan. Some patients benefit from more than one session, with reassessment as support develops.
Technique is not simply about filling an isolated line or hollow: preparation, depth, tissue plane, and distribution are selected for facial shape, underlying support, tissue behavior, and the correction being pursued. Sculptra cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase, making patient selection and placement especially important. At Gerrish MedEsthetics, Sculptra is performed by an appropriately trained treating clinician within the practice's clinical standards.
The biologic response and visible improvement may persist over time, although the degree and duration vary among patients. Results may last up to approximately two years in some patients; maintenance may be recommended according to individual response.
The key question is whether the concern is best addressed through gradual collagen biostimulation or whether targeted volume, movement, skin quality, or surgical laxity is the primary problem.
